Dear friends, colleagues, and allies:
We need you now more than ever. On the morning of April 30, 2014, Whose Diversity? presented an extensive list of demands to the administration of the University of Minnesota, after sharing our truths out loud at the steps of the historic Morrill Hall building. We have spent months writing and revising these demands, dedicating great care to the content and phrasing of the needs to witness structural change. These demands are not superficial -- for all of us, they carry great impact as they reflect our lived realities. This is why we have consulted several friends, colleagues, students and professors to receive feedback. Our organizing efforts are rooted in a sincere love for and commitment to our communities. We want to ensure that people in our campus feel safe, welcome, and supported. This has not been the case for everyone, particularly for people of color, and/or GLBTQ people, and/or differently-abled people, and/or working-class people, and/or people of multiple spiritual beliefs, among others who come from historically marginalized communities.
Further, on April 30th we visited President Kaler’s office and requested to see him; we were told he was not available, so we hand-delivered a copy of our demands to Amy Phenix, Chief of Staff. She agreed to personally deliver these demands to President Kaler. We also hand-delivered a copy of our demands and a letter to Dr. Katrice Albert, Vice President of Equity and Diversity. We stated that we expect a formal and written response to our demands by May 8, 2014.
Building on the work of our predecessors, we recognize the urgent need to enact change on our campus. We have thoughtfully worked on this list of demands and we are now asking for your endorsement, hoping that this list speaks to you the way it does to us. We are seeking the support of current and former University of Minnesota students, staff and faculty, as well as the support of our community members. Your support is crucial to demonstrating to this administration that change needs to be enacted immediately.
Please provide your endorsement, and share this form with all of your networks.
With love and gratitude,
